Finest Climbing Harness in the World

Goose Kearse loves growing jobs. He thinks the best effect of any company is to provide employment, and he's doing that at Misty Mountain Threadworks, a cut and sew operation with 10 employees that manufactures high-end harnesses for climbing, camps and programs, arborists, and military use.

Goose owns the company with Woody Keen, a high school buddy that started making climbing harnesses in 1985. Both men are climbers, so they know the importance of high-quality, safe equipment. "We wanted a versatile and adjustable harness with pads, one that met or exceeded ASTM standards," said Goose. "Our Cadillac harness is very comfortable with lots of gear loops for climbing."

Apparently their climbing customers agree—Misty Mountain harnesses are sold in many upscale outdoor adventure shops such as REI, Jesse Brown, Footsloggers, Black Dome, and Diamond Brand.

Misty Mountain also sells harnesses to the US military, one of their largest customers now. The Army Mountain Warfare School in Vermont uses Misty Mountain gear, and the Air Force uses a Special Forces belt, called an integrated stealth harness, as part of a tactical combat casualty care gear bag.

Sales revenues are up more than 30% over last year. Goose is pleased that their improved profit margin allows him to hire more skilled workers. He also realizes that to remain successful, the company must stay true to what they do. "We want to make the best climbing harnesses in the world, and it's corny, but we really believe in that. We make those for total comfort for body and mind and maybe spirit too. It's lifesaving equipment," he noted.

One reason for the company's success is finding a niche where they can excel. "We work closely with the different market segments, listening carefully to what they need, and meeting with end users who help us find solutions. We're also proud that our products are made in the US; that's important to our customers," said Goose. He also says the area is a natural fit for the industry with Grandfather Mountain and Linville Gorge nearby.

Although Goose could live anywhere (he has lived in many different places including overseas) he says he wouldn't live anywhere else in the world. "I got here and it's like being in Heaven. I can ski, climb, mountain bike, whatever. It's a safe place to raise kids and we all love outdoor recreation together. ASU is a great cultural resource also."

Goose says entrepreneurs looking to succeed in Watauga County must have passion and a valid idea. "You can't sleepwalk as an entrepreneur. You have to refigure how you gage balance, for two or three years you may have to work 70 hours a week. Also know that customers don't come find you—you have to go to them."
