Two entrepreneur friendly towns dominate Transylvania County, Brevard and Rosman. Brevard—population 7000+ and the county seat—vibrants with energy. Its 16 block "Heart of Brevard" shopping district includes art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, clothing, antiques, an amazing toy store, and many service businesses. Brevard regularly earns small town accolades—recently it was named the third coolest small town in America, and the first in the SE.
Rosman, population about 600, is on the eastern border of Pisgah National Forest—the French Broad River runs through the town. Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute is close by.
Get outside and play
The county is known for its unspoiled forests and waterfalls. Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest and Gorges State Park all lie within county borders, offering camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, and mountain biking in all seasons. An amazing array of waterfalls, 250+, help the county earn its nickname, land of waterfalls. The public land is so vast and varied people can live here for decades and still not see it all.
Performing and fine arts
Internationally respected Brevard Music Center hosts the Brevard Music Festival each year for seven weeks. The Paul Porter Center for the Performing Arts on Brevard College campus draws orchestras, choral societies, and concerts from performers across the world. There are an amazing 262 art events that take place annually in the county, and 26 arts organizations, so it's easy to find a gallery walk or studio. Scattered throughout Brevard are 16 life-size sculptures of native animals.
Community Spirit
Volunteerism permeates Transylvania County, from retired executives working as mentors for the Senior Resource Network or SCORE to 50+ people who help the Sheriff's Department patrol roads. When nonprofits ask for help they get it, businesses regularly donate time and money to the community.
Oh yes, there are white squirrels too! There's even a white squirrel festival each year.
