Human Capital and Excellent Access

Excellent broadband access in the county makes it easy to do business here. More than 95% of the population has Internet access and a new service provider is upgrading rapidly. Brevard's standard regulations simplify starting a business, and local government is accessible and responsive.

Top industries in the county include health care and social assistance and retail trade. Accommodations and food services and education are also large employers.

Several business resources provide help for new and existing businesses. These include the Senior Resource Network and SCORE, two nonprofit groups of mostly retired executives, managers, and professionals that offer mentoring and education at no cost to entrepreneurs and other businesses.

The two organizations are in close communication. They cross-refer clients and combine resources to work with certain clients.

The Transylvania Partnership is another nonprofit that promotes development; they offer small loans to relocating businesses. The Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Office sponsor frequent networking events and seminars. A one-year Vision leadership program from the Chamber graduates about 25 leaders each year; prospects submit applications for acceptance.

Blue Ridge Community College's Small Business Center includes an incubator that offers space for new or existing businesses on a time-limited basis. Brevard College's emphasis on service learning includes opportunities for student internships.

County Commissioners celebrate area business with an annual awards program. The county recognizes manufacturers, retailers and entrepreneurs. There is also a Chairman's Choice award.
